2008 NDIA Small Arms Systems Symposium Firing Demo: Initial Report

Aaaand we’re back. Sorry for the delay in reporting in, but we’ve been fighting the travel demons and illness (minor and temporary) simultaneously. We shot some good video at the 2008 NDIA International Infantry & Joint Services Small Arms Systems Symposium, but we’re not sure how much of it we can show, yet.
We shot some footage in the lecture hall, and some at the firing demo. Some interesting things occurred in the lecture hall, so we’ll go into some of that at a later date. However, right now, we’re going to…
Eurofighter Typhoon: Can Thrust-Vectoring and Low-Observability be Added?
by David Crane

DefenseReview has been hearing some pretty great things about the Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role combat fighter aircraft’s performance, from its excellent flight characteristics to its pilot-friendly cockpit, to its helmet-mounted display and targeting system. What’s interesting is that it can perform so well acrobatically, even without thrust vectoring. Advanced electronic fly-by-wire flight controls, combined with pitch-unstable design and forward canards, no doubt, assist in giving the Typhoon its superb aerial capability, even without thrust vectoring. However, it would be interesting to see what it could do if full-aspect thrust vectoring were added to the exhaust nozzles of the Typhoon’s two "staggeringly powerful"/simple-architecture Eurojet EJ200 turbofan engines.
Defense Review has heard rumors that conventional/non-low-observable fighter aircraft have been rendered virtually invisible to radar and

While I was going through some of our pictures from NDIA Small Arms Systems Symposium 2007, I came across some action photos of the HK MP7A1 PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) with a Gemtech "Brick" rectangular silencer/sound suppressor attached, including one of me firing the weapon/silencer combo, myself. Anyway, I thought I’d share it with our readers since I haven’t seen a picture of it anywhere else, and the Brick’s rectangular/angular shape is somewhat unusual.
DefenseReview mentioned the "Brick" muzzle can back in May 2007 after we tried it out at the symposium demo shoot at Blackwater USA. The "Brick" is…
5.56 Optimized/Brown-Tip Ammo: Enhanced Terminal Ballistics for SpecOps SBRs
By David Crane

Modified on 5/15/08 — Some information has been redacted/removed from this article by the author/editor (David Crane) for OPSEC.
A number of months ago, DefenseReview was informed by one of our contacts in the U.S. military Special Operations (SpecOps) community that our Special Operations Forces (SOF) assaulters/operators now have a new, specialized 5.56×45mm NATO (5.56mm NATO)/.223 Rem. round at their disposal that’s been unofficially referred to as the "5.56 Optimized" (pronounced "Five Five Six Optimized") and/or "Brown Tip", because the round has, appropriately, a brown tip.
The "optimized" nomenclature apparently refers to the fact that the round is optimized for subcarbines/SBRs (Short Barreled Rifles) and carbines from 10.5-14.5 inches, in order to provide optimum terminal ballistics out of the shortened weapon platform. We don’t know the maximum effective combat distance for the round out of a 10.3"-10.5" barrel, but we’re guessing approx. 300-350 yards (unconfirmed/unverified). At present, we believe that the specific weapons for which the round was optimized are the…
TacCam Advanced Tactical Camera: Weapons-Mounted Camera for Tactical Ops
By David Crane
defrev at gmail dot com
Frank Borelli of Borelli Consulting has a product review up on a a weapons-mounted "Advanced Tactical Camera" made by Pacific Concepts ATC/HBD Inc. called the TacCam. While TacCam doesn’t transmit live video and audio, it does store about an hour of it (A/V) on a 2-Gig SD card for after-action analysis of a tactical training session, shooting incident, or tactical op (tactical operation). TacCam offers a 30-frame-per-second capture rate with 640×480 VGA video resolution. Power is provided by two AA batteries, which can be AA-sized lithium batteries.
According to Borelli, "to achieve playback after the fact you can either connect the USB or RCA cables to play the video back on your computer or television, or you can remove the SD card and put it in your computer’s chip slot." Sounds easy enough.

Select Controls Shot Counter and Weapon Diagnostics for Infantry Small Arms
by David Crane
defrev at gmail.com
While we were walking around the exhibition hall at NDIA International Infantry & Joint Services Small Arms Systems Symposium 2008, we ran into Ken Brinkley of Select Controls, Inc. (SC), who was discussing one of SC’s systems with one of the vendors. From what we were able to discern, Select Controls has an electronic shot counter that can allow the operator to keep precise track of his shots fired. We’re going to be giving Ken a call to find out exactly how it works, but just looking at the website, it would seem that the system works via an acceleration sensor (unconfirmed/unverified), but we don’t know, yet.
BTW, that’s not all Select Controls (SC) can do, apparently. From what we were able to overhear, SC has a system that can not only count shots, but also give complete weapon diagnostics. So, if the weapon experiences a stoppage, jam, or malfunction, or if there’s a parts failure of any kind, the system can assist in figuring out exactly how it happened. We’re definitely going to interview Ken about this. Some of our immediate questions are:…

Kansas Governor Deserves Thanks
This week Kansas governor signs machine gun bill. This is obviously good news. It is also an opportunity.
I don’t normally follow Kansas politics, but my understanding is that Governor Kathleen Sebelius is not someone we can normally rely on to support our rights. But this week, she came through.
We in the gun rights movement are fast to jump on those that would infringe our rights. We should be just as quick to say thank you to those that move in the right direction.
For all you Kansas residents, link to the governor’s email form and let her know you appreciate that she is recognizing lawful gun owners are not a crime problem.
Update: Read the comment below. The question becomes, do you thank someone for doing the right thing even if it is for the wrong reason? That would be an individual decision.
