4/10/2012 9:59:59 AM Thanks for the replies everyone. It will just be a range gun for now. I’m a lowly grad student so this is what’s going to get me through my next few degrees. Oderus1671, I’ll put a few looks in to Model 1. They solve my main issues with most of the upper AR-15 Accessories . I don’t really want the front sight post. I’d rather just have a low profile gas block so I can fiddle with the handguards/rails more easily. I’m a lifelong tinkerer so this rifle won’t be left alone over the next few years, there just won’t be any major overhauls. Aimless, thanks for the reference. I don’t know anything about J and T. What’s the read on these guys? If in fact ar15-kits does just outlet for them, are these parts worth buying? I’ve looked around on the JT site and I don’t see much, and there are a smattering of mentions of them on other forums, some good, some not as good. Thoughts? DFABOVE

fortunatly the parts are easily switched out for real M-14 Scope Mounts parts or Garand rear sight components. As previosly mentioned the barrels are usualy chambered for 7.62mm nato not nesessarily .308 so do a headspace check every few hundred rounds and you should be good to go.

Heres What Clint McKee has to say on the subject, http://www.fulton-armory.com/M14 Scope MountsS_Eval.htm Read it in its entirety for the better understanding.

Yep, those cast parts SA uses are WAY better than the forged parts on the Polytech. The lack of a chrome lined barrel on the SA guns is an added bonus too.
They can be forged all day long and still not overcome the inherent weakness in the chinese design. I will say that yes I would prefer forged over cast but, that is only one consideration. I still think the OP will get the short end if he makes the trade but, YMMV.

So will the Mesa Tactical be too large for a person that is 6’3 and weighs 175? So plate carriers cont work as well if plates are not in… Glad to know that now. Just out of curiosity; what is the price range for a good set of plates? ARCANGEL 5/29/2009 8:50:57 AM Check THIS for an idea on plates pricing. and HERE too. Height-wise, it was fine. But it wouldn’t cinch down tight enough. Here’s what he wrote when I asked his size: I am 6-3 and 180 lbs. As for chest size…..not sure but I’m pretty thin there too. My waist is 34 or 36 and my chest is close to that. If I had soft armor on I could have fit the vest. So there you have it. LRB_M1A 5/30/2009 12:10:14 AM Well thank you TimW for the honest reply. I am playing around with the idea of buying a plate carrier now that I know plates are not toooo expensive. I was under the assumption that plates alone were in the $1000 range. Currently for my gear set up I have x2 TT 5.56 Triple Mag Panel, x2 5.56/.223 Single Mag Pouch, HSGI Blowout Pouch, and a HSGI Mini Modular Radio pouch. Am I going to run into problems fitting all of that onto a plate carrier? vedubin01 5/30/2009 12:46:54 AM TimW 5/30/2009 2:04:16 AM Originally Posted By LRB_M1A: Currently for my gear set up I have x2 TT 5.56
Mesa Tactical –
Received this from a Threeper I trust implicitly regarding LaRue Tactical quality control problems and service issues. He included a copy of a series of emails back and forth beginning in December of last year. Here’s his latest to me:
Mike,
I’d like to warn people about buying scope mounts from LaRue Tactical since you may well not get the one you need, and then they won’t do anything about it. When you spend $250.00 for a scope mount, it damn well be the one you needed, especially when you called and spoke to their rep before ordering.
If you could warn your readers, I think it would be a great service to them. Perhaps ask David to do the same. The story is in the below email stream.
The picture of my rife, scope mount and scope fitted and bore-sighted attached. As you can see, it has to go all the way up to the turret to get a decent eye relief. Also, I had to crank it all the way up to get it bore-sighted for 100 yards, leaving no more elevation for greater distances.
Before anyone buys a quick disconnect sight from LaRue Tactical, they better know exactly what they need to get because the reps at LaRue have no idea.
The shame is that I have previously purchased two other mounts for ACOGS for my other rifles from them. Still they have no interest in rectifying this situation.
Thanks,

My son has been collecting the components to build himself a 7.62 NATO sniper platform on an Armalite receiver much like the one pictured. He was thinking, if memory serves me correctly, of getting a LaRue Tactical mount like the one pictured. I will discourage him from doing so.
Chinese design???
The M14 Scope Mounts and its predecessor the M1 Rifle were the brain children of John C. Garrand. An American small arms engineer and designer who worked for the US Army Ordinance Corp.,,,In America. If you get the chance check what this http://www.fulton-armory.com/M14 Scope MountsS_Eval.htm has to sat about the materials, the dimensions and the geometry of the Chinese forged receivers.

Seems like this thread is alot like many threads online. Some of the so called “experts” say don’t trade it because it’s Chinese made.

The lack of a chrome lined barrel on the SA guns is an added bonus too. MackUSMC [Member] 2/4/2009 10:00:10 PM Do it absolutley! it is a very fair trade. The poly may not have the finnish of the springfields but the parts on the rifle, such as the reciever, and op-rod are forged, not investment cast. the poly barrels are chrome lined and are equal in quality to GI M-14 Scope Mounts barrels. Parts for the M-14 Scope Mounts will interchange with the poly M-14 Scope Mountss with the exception of the gas cylinder lock. the first batch of poly/norinco M-14 Scope Mountss bolts were hit and miss on the case hardening, but you can get replacements or swap the poly bot for a GI. the only caveat about that is have it done properly and make sure the head space is acceptable. The rear sight truss, base and knobs were sometimes soft, and not as durable as the GI or springfield inc. parts.
Didn’t handle it but it did look pretty good- Thought at first he had a FAMAS!
